Privacy notice

You must be 18 or older

This service is for adults. We ask you to confirm your age when you sign in for the first time, and we record that confirmation. We do not ask for your date of birth, because we do not need it. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and if we learn that we have, we delete it.

What we collect

• Your email address. It is how you sign in and how we reach you. There is no password to lose.
• A display name, if you choose one. You do not have to use your real name.
• What you post. Photographs of your items, the details you record about them, and any story you write.
• Messages you send to the person on the other side of a request or a claim.
• A postal address, only sometimes. When someone agrees to send you an item, you choose how it reaches you. If you choose to send a prepaid label or to meet in person, no address is ever stored. Only if you choose to share an address do we hold one, and only until the item arrives.
• Ordinary server records such as IP address and browser type, kept for security and troubleshooting.

What we never collect

There are no payments in Missing Pair, so we hold no card numbers, no bank details, and no transaction history. Items are not sold, and nothing here has a price. We do not track you across other websites, and we run no advertising.

How long we keep it

• A sign-in link stops working after fifteen minutes, or once used.
• A signed-in session lasts thirty days.
• A postal address is erased as soon as the recipient confirms the item arrived, or the handoff is cancelled, whichever comes first.
• Listings stay as long as you want them to. Nothing expires on its own, because a match can take years. We ask occasionally whether you still have the item.
• Your account and everything in it stays until you ask us to delete it. We then remove it within thirty days.
• Server records are kept for thirty days.

Who else sees it

Other members see what you publish: your listings, your display name, and any reunion story you chose to make public. They do not see your email address. A postal address is visible only to the one person sending you an item, and only while that handoff is running.

We use a small number of service providers to run the site: hosting, the database, file storage for photographs, an email service, and a check on the sign-in form that tells people from bots. They process this information on our instructions and for no other purpose. We do not sell or share personal information, as those terms are used in the California Consumer Privacy Act.

What you can ask for

You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and ask us to delete it. You can delete your own account from your profile at any time without asking. We will not treat you differently for exercising any of these rights.

Depending on where you live, your state may give you further rights. California residents have the rights described in the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, including the right to know, to delete, to correct, and to opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of.

Security

Sign-in links and session cookies are stored only as hashes, so a copy of our database would not let anyone sign in as you. Details a finder holds back to verify a claim are never sent to the page, so they cannot be read from the browser.

If this notice changes in a way that matters, we will say so on the site before the change takes effect.
